Too Much Control

Graffiti.
It is forever the leading topic of discussion amongst orthodox community members fighting for their beautiful 'pristine' park benches and sign posts. But for those who can appreciate the effort and skill that goes into producing a large graffiti piece, we see art, not vandalism.

This image is designed represent the overshadowing control authority has over youth and their desire to express themselves. Spray art pieces taking over 5 hours to create can be demolished in under 5mins because they are not yet accepted in society. This notion can be replicated everywhere we go. There are people telling us that we are weird for having coloured hair, or saying we are wrong because we like someone of the same gender, or that we are criminals for making our mark on a piece of paper and slapping it on a wall. The white circle represents the nagging voice in the back of your head saying "Stop!" every time you scale the side of a building just to reach the rooftop. We know its wrong, but is it really hurting anybody, or is it just another barrier placed in order to retain some control among the unruly.

This house is situated on a hill overlooking the majority of Brisbane's beautiful skyline. It is surrounded by block after block of brick mansion monstrosities. Between all the concrete lies this little gem, where the youth goes to release some tension, to embrace the disfunction and give a big middle finger to the conservative circle of society.
